HICKORY, N.C. – The first round of the NCAA Super Region II game between No. 10 Converse and No. 7 Wingate ends in a penalty kick shootout as the 'Dogs edge out the Valkyries 4-3 in PKs to move on to face Lenoir-Rhyne in the second round on Monday night.
 
Converse ends the season 13-1-5, Conference Carolinas Regular Season Champions, Conference Carolinas Tournament Champions and the first team in Converse history to have a NCAA Tournament berth.
 
Shots were evenly matched between Converse and Wingate as each team took seven shots in the first half. A late goal in the 43^rd minute by Khalil Khenayzir would put the 'Dogs up 1-0 going to halftime.
 
Converse outshot Wingate 8-4 in the second half, getting plenty of good looks, but none going the Valkyries way until the 86^th minute. Hayden Gensler would draw a foul in the box to allow for a Converse penalty kick. Sergi Quixal took the kick and scored to tie the game up at one all. No more goals were scored in regulation, sending the game into two overtime periods of 10 minutes each.
 
Converse would get no looks at goal in the first extra period while Wingate took two shots, neither being on goal. In the second period of overtime, each team took two shots. Both of the Valkyries shots were on goal, however, Wingate keeper Aleksa Janjic was able to stop both of them.
 
It was now PK time to determine who would keep dancing in the NCAA Tournament. Kyle Lewis stepped up first for Converse, making the first shot. Pedro Santos missed wide for Wingate, giving Converse hope. Owen Collins then missed his shot while Niclas Wittur made his attempt for the 'Dogs. Once again, Quixal comes in clutch, making his second PK of the night to give the Valkyries a 2-1 lead in the shootout. The pressure got to Guilherme Fontes as he missed his shot for Wingate. Maximilian Seiwald stepped up and rocketed his shot past Janjic to make it 3-1 in Converse's favor. The next three shots taken by Wingate got past Windmiller as the final two attempts from Converse were unsuccessful, ending their Cinderella season.
