SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team recorded their sixth shutout of the season as they defeated Lander 1-0 in overtime at Weisiger Stadium.
"I'm so proud of our team and our resilience tonight," Converse University head field hockey coach
Valerie Clarke said. "This is our third game in four days, and you could tell we have played a lot of hockey lately. Lander played hard and made us fight for every inch. It was an intense hockey game tonight, but we never stopped playing our game and it paid off in the end."
Converse (11-1, 7-1 SAC) got off to a slow start by there standards and recorded just a trio of shots in the opening two periods of action. The Valkyries defense once again stood strong as they held Lander (4-6, 2-6 SAC) to just a pair of shots in the opening half of action.
In the second half the Valkyries offense was unusually quiet as they attempted just three total shots in between the third and fourth quarters. The Converse defense buckled down to help out their offense and held the Bearcats to just two shots in the entire half.
Then in the first overtime period the Valkyries offense came alive and outshot Lander 5-1.
Lotte Kanters found
Catalina Pistaccio for the game-winning goal and Converse prevailed with the win over Lander.
