SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 6 field hockey team in the country took care of business on Tuesday night as Converse defeated Limestone 1-0 in a rematch of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship from a season ago.
Converse (9-0, 6-0 SAC) maintains their hold atop the South Atlantic Conference and their win streak has now reached 11 games dating back to last season. Limestone (4-7, 3-4 SAC) gave the Valkyries everything they had and made Converse work for the lone goal of the game.
In the first half of the contest the Valkyries controlled the game and held Limestone on their defensive half of the pitch. Although the Valkyries were unable to put up a goal in the first two quarters of action, they still outshot the Saints 9-0.
In the second half the Valkyries turned up the pressure on the Saints and
Larissa Stanjeck found
Lotte Kanters for her 19
th goal of the season. Although the score gave the Valkyries some relief on the offensive, the defense still had to stop a pesky Saints offense. With just five minutes to go in the game, Nicola Naude ripped a shot toward the goal and as the ball spun towards the line
Josephine Jense helped preserve the shutout with a goal line save.
As a team the Valkyries outshot Limestone 22-6 overall and 10-2 on goal. Converse recorded 17 penalty corners and made just two saves in the match.
