MARS HILL, N.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team defeated Mars Hill 4-3 this past weekend at the Hart Tennis Complex on the campus of Mars Hill University.
In doubles action the Valkyries got off to a slow start as they dropped the No. 2 doubles court to give Mars Hill an early advantage. The Valkyries No. 3 doubles tandem of
Leopold Morel and
Cameron Davies won 6-4 to force a winner take all tiebreaker at the No. 1 doubles court. The Valkyries top duo of
Merlin Bellet and
Enzo Marcheschi gave it their all but came up short in a 7-6 defeat.
Trailing 1-0 entering the singles portion of the match the Valkyries looked to rally against the Lions. Bellet set the tone with a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles and
Gregoire Legrand won a three-set thriller to give the Valkyries a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Paul Berrouet and Davies both lost at their respective courts to give the Lions the lead once again, but a straight sets win at No. 6 singles by Morel tied the matchup once more.
Marcheschi won the opening set at the No.3 singles flight but then had to battle back after losing the second. With the match on the line, Marcheschi won the third set 10-7 to clinch the match for Converse.
The men's tennis team will have some time off before traveling down to Newberry on October 29
