Spartanburg, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team lost at home to #23 Barton by a score of 60-47.
Converse (3-9, 2-7 Conference Carolinas) showed up in the first quarter, looking to upset ranked opponent Barton College. After a strong start for the Valkyries, the Bulldogs and Shanika Peterson would kick things into gear, ultimately outplaying Converse offensively.
First Quarter:
- Converse showed that they were up for a fight against the #23 ranked team in the country, Barton.
- After going back and forth in baskets and a tied game at 13-13, Converse called a timeout with 4:11 remaining in the quarter.
- Converse ended the quarter with 18 points while Barton had 15 points.
- Eva Carballo scored 8 points, proving to be a key player for the Valkyries.
Second Quarter:
- The Bulldogs would score the first 8 points of the second quarter, making the score 19-18.
- Barton continued to dominate in the paint, keeping Converse from making an offensive advancement.
- Scoreless in the quarter and trailing by 5 points, the Valkyries would call a timeout with 4:43 left in the first half.
- Sydney Wilson scored the first points for Converse, ending their scoring drought.
- The Valkyries went into the locker room down 29-24 to the Bulldogs.
Third Quarter:
- Converse started with the ball, but a quick turnover would give Barton the ball. A travel violation by Lauren Walker would allow Colbie Perry to score the first points of the second half for Converse.
- Trailing by 18 points, the Valkyries called a timeout with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter.
- A solid offensive half for Barton would send them into the final quarter of regulation leading 52-39.
Fourth Quarter:
- A slow start to the fourth quarter would not allow for a single point to be put up on the board until almost 3 minutes had been shaved off the clock. Barton would score the first points of the quarter off a layup from Peterson.
- The Valkyries outscored the Bulldogs 8-6 this quarter. 5 out of 6 of Barton's points would come from senior Shanika Peterkin.
- Barton would win by a score of 60-47.
Wilson lead the Valkyries in points with 15.
Lindsey Hardin ranked second scoring 11 points.
Amaia Parkins lead the team in rebounds and blocks, racking up 15 and 5 respectively.
Peterkin put up impressive numbers for Barton, scoring 19 points, tallying 24 rebounds and having 5 blocks. Walker scored 15 points and had 6 rebounds while teammate Akira Wiggins had 11 points and 4 rebounds.

The Valkyries will travel to Belmont, N.C. on Wednesday, January 12 at 5:00 p.m. to battle the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College.
