SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team falls short to UNC Pembroke at home on Friday night.
Converse (3-10, 2-8 Conference Carolinas) started off slow in the first half but looked to edge a lead on UNC Pembroke in the second half. The Valkyries' efforts were ultimately unsuccessful though as they would lose 57-42 to the Braves.
First Quarter:
- The game started off slow on both sides of the ball as the first points of the game would not be scored until two and a half minutes had been shaved off the clock. UNC Pembroke would score the first four points before Sydney Wilson would score, putting Converse up on the board.
- Lindsey Hardin would check in for the Valkyries and immediately make a layup, tying the game up at 4.
- After several shots would go in and out, Converse would end the first quarter with a lead of 8-7 over UNC Pembroke.
Second Quarter:
- The Braves would score the first six points of the second quarter before a Wilson layup would end their scoring run.
- UNC Pembroke kicked their offense and defense into gear, going on a 13-0 run and holding Converse scoreless for six minutes.
- Ayanna Parker would end the scoring drought for the Valkyries, hitting a three from deep.
- The Braves outscored the Valkyries 25-5 during the duration of the second quarter, sending them into the locker-room with a lead of 32-13.
Third Quarter:
- A personal foul by Alcenia Purnell on Jordan Brown would give Converse the first two points of the second half.
- Courtney Smith scored 7 points for the Braves, leading the team in points during the third quarter while Jordan Brown lead the Valkyries with 4 points during the quarter.
- Converse went into the final quarter trailing by a score of 43-21.
Fourth Quarter:
- A deep three from Colbie Perry would give Converse the first points on the fourth quarter.
- Converse would go on an 8-0 run before Smith answered with a three-pointer for UNC Pembroke.
- Exchanging free throws and points during the last quarter, UNC Pembroke would come away victorious by a score of 57-42.
Brown and Wilson lead Converse with 11 points each. Wilson tallied 15 rebounds, followed by
Amaia Parkins who had 9 rebounds.
Colbie Perry lead the Valkyries with 2 assists, while Hardin lead the team in blocks with 2 on the night.
Smith lead the Braves with 18 points and 5 assists, followed by Gabby Smith who had 16 points. Zaria Clark had 9 rebounds on the night.
Next Up:
The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, January 22 against Francis Marion in the Weisiger Center at 2:00 p.m.
