SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse Valkyries women's basketball team dropped their contest to Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots walked away victorious by a score of 86-64.
Converse (3-11, 2-9 Conference Carolinas) had a strong second quarter, outscoring Francis Marion 27-21. In the end, Francis Marion would get another road win, advancing to 8-6, 7-5 Conference Carolinas.
First Quarter:
- Francis Marion would win the opening tip-off and immediately score a layup to put them up on the board first.
- After the Patriots scored the fist six points, Jordan Brown for the Valkyries would end their scoring streak, putting Converse on the scoreboard.
- Converse would call a timeout with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter, trailing by 5 points.
- Unable to connect offensively, the Valkyries would head into the second quarter down 25-12.
Second Quarter:
- Francis Marion would once again score the first points of the quarter, making the score 28-12.
- Converse would gain momentum, outscoring the Patriots 8-5 before Francis Marion called a timeout with 6:51 remaining in the first half.
- The Valkyries would continue to dominate, trying to draw close to the Patriots' lead.
- Converse outscored Francis Marion 27-21 in the second quarter, sending them into halftime only trailing by 7 points.
Third Quarter:
- Coming out of the locker-room with a lead of 46-39, Aniyah Oliver for the Patriots would score the first points of the second half.
- Converse would call an early timeout, after being outscored 9-0.
- The Valkyries look to make a big comeback as they head into the final quarter trailing 70-51.
Fourth Quarter:
- Converse would score the first two points of the fourth quarter off of free throws by Brown.
- Francis Marion would outscore Converse 16-13 in the final quarter, being led in points by Kiana Lee who had 6 points.
- In the end, Converse would drop this contest to Francis Marion by a score of 86-64.
Ayanna Parker led the Valkyries in points, contributing 11 points while
Zahra Cross, Alliee Patillo and
Sydney Wilson all scored 10 points. Wilson led Converse in rebounds with 8 on the afternoon.
Lindsey Hardin had 5 assists and
Amaia Parkins had 3 blocks during the game.
Zaria Woods scored 16 points, leading the Patriots in points. Lauryn Taylor, Scarlett Gilmore and Kiana Lee each had 15 points. Woods also led Francis Marion in rebounds and blocks, tallying 10 rebounds and 2 blocks during the contest. Aniyah Oliver had 7 assists for the Patriots.

The Valkyries will be back in action on Tuesday, January 25 against North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.
