Spartanburg, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team lost 63-51 on Friday evening to Chowan University.
The Valkyries (3-8, 2-6 Conference Carolinas) were unable to get the win after outshooting the Hawks from the field and beyond the arch. Converse shot 45.8 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from the arch. Chowan shot 39.7 percent from the field and 31.3 percent beyond the arch.
First Quarter:
- At the end of the first quarter, Chowan lead 21-12.
- Brianna Copeland's three-point shot would put the Hawks up on the board first.
- After a layup from Sydney Wilson and a three-point shot form Alliee Pattillo, the Valkyries would hold their only lead of the quarter.
- Chowan would answer with layups, gaining the lead back.
- The Hawks shot 52.9 percent from the field, while Converse shot 45.5 percent from the field.
Second Quarter:
- The Valkyries lead in points scored in the second quarter, but would go into halftime trailing 28-22.
- After scoring the first two points of the quarter, Chowan would go on a 4-0 run. Converse would answer with a 4-0 run of their own.
- Sydney Wilson lead in scoring for the Valkyries 6 points. Monique Jones lead the Hawks with 4 points scored.
Third Quarter:
- Converse exploded offensively coming out of halftime. Three threes from the Valkyries allowed them to make an offensive comeback, going into the fourth quarter only trailing by one point.
- The Valkyries went on a 7-0 run before the Hawks had a chance to answer. A layup from Monique Jones would end the run for the Hwaks before Converse went on another run, this time scoring 8 unanswered points.
- A jumper at the buzzer by Tyaysia Sharpe for the Hawks would make the score 44-43 going into the final quarter of play.
Fourth Quarter:
- Converse would come out hot, scoring 4 points and regaining the lead for a period of time.
- The Hawks would answer, going on a 13-4 run before taking a timeout with 1:40 remaining in regulation.
- Chowan maintained the lead the rest of the game, ending regulation with a score of 63-51.
Sydney Wilson lead the Valkyries with 16 points and
Lindsey Hardin,
Eva Carballo, and Pattillo all finished with 9 points. Pattillo was percent on the night, shooting 100 percent from the field. Wilson was second, scoring 53.3 percent of shots taken from the field.
Demetria Bland lead the Hawks with 17 points on the night. Jones followed closely behind with 16 points. Copeland would finish the night perfect from the free throw line and 80 percent from the field.
Next Up:
The Valkyries will be back in action Saturday afternoon against Barton College at 2:00 p.m. in the Weisiger Center.
