Game Recap: Softball |

Softball falls in doubleheader at Lander University

Greenwood, SC – On Wednesday, the Converse College Women's Softball team traveled down I-26 for an afternoon doubleheader with Lander University.  The Valkyries would look to get back in the win column after dropping a doubleheader at home on Sunday, while the Bearcats were coming in after splitting with Emmanuel.  Even though this was a non-conference match-up, both teams were very familiar with each other, having faced off a number of times in previous years.

Game 1 started off with Abbigale Outlaw reaching 1st base after being hit by a pitch.  Next, Allison Plafcan drew a walk and suddenly Converse had two on with no outs in the 1st inning.  Brooklyn McElrath came to the plate but would end up grounding out into a double play.  A Grace McKinney single advanced Plafcan to 3rd base, but Ellie Stout was unable to drive her home, which ended their half of the inning.  Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Valkyries were able to generate, as Lander scored in every inning of the game.  They would go on to win game 1 by a final score of 11-0.

In Game 2, Converse kept the game scoreless through 1 ½ innings, until the Bearcats were able to break the tie in the bottom of the 2nd.  In the top of the 4th, the Valkyries would start a rally as Ryan Finazzo started it off with a single to right center.  Julianne Outlaw came to the plate and singled to right field, moving Finazzo to 2nd.  She would eventually advance to 3rd base and was driven home on a Kyla Rocha RBI, to tie the game at 1-1.  However, Lander's bats came alive in their half of the 4th inning, scoring 8 runs and that is how the game would end, with Converse falling to the Bearcats, 9-1.

The Valkyries will put the losses behind them and look to bounce back, as they return to action this Friday, March 5th.  They will welcome Limestone University to Tyger River Park for a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00pm and all the live action can be seen on the Conference Carolinas Digital Network at https://www.conferencecarolinasdn.com/converse/
