Gaffney, SC – On Tuesday night, the Converse College Field Hockey team traveled just down the road to face fellow SAC member, Limestone University. Due to a canceled game, the Valkyries had not faced competition since February 10
th and they were anxious to get back on the field. The Saints came into the game with a record of 1-0, while Converse entered the game with a record of 0-1. Limestone has consistently been regarded as one of the top teams in the SAC, but the Valkyries we ready and prepared for the match-up.
Both teams were able to deny each other any scoring opportunities in the first quarter. Each team had a penalty corner but were unable to capitalize on them. The second quarter saw
Mira Polzer try to create a scoring opportunity but the shot was too high. After a save by Goalie
Ciriaca Petitto at the 6:30 minute mark of the quarter, Polzer was able to set up another scoring chance, but this time her shot was wide. Petitto and her defense continued to shut down the Saints, but as the half came to an end, Limestone was able to get a shot past Petitto to go into halftime leading, 1-0.
The start of the third quarter saw Converse's
Eryn Follett get a shot on goal which was followed by a penalty corner. The Valkyries defense continued to play strong and deny Limestone any scoring opportunities. However, at the 9:17 mark of the quarter, the Saints were able to sneak a rebound into the goal, to take a 2-0 lead. The remainder of the quarter and all of the fourth quarter was a back and forth game, with both teams stepping up defensively. As the horn sounded, Converse would come up on the short end of the stick, 2-0.
While Coach Clarke will tell you their ae no moral victories, she was extremely proud of the way her team played. They played one of the top teams in the SAC and were in the game for all four quarters. The Valkyries will have a week to build on their performance when they visit Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday, March 9
th. Start time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
