Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls 4-0 to Newberry in Season Opener

Newberry, SC – After over 400 days since playing a game, the Converse College Field Hockey team finally found themselves back in competitive action.  While it is the spring, and not the fall, the team did not care.  They were excited to be back on the field and hoping to start the new season on a positive note.  Today, they traveled to Newberry, SC to face Newberry College in a 4:00pm start.

The game was back and forth for the first few minutes, but Newberry would get on the board first, when they slapped a shot past Valkyries goalie, Ciriaca Petitto, at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter.  That would be the score as the quarter ended and Converse would regroup and get ready for the 2nd quarter.  The Valkyries began to get a few shots on goal in the 2nd quarter, but they were unable to convert.  After giving up a goal, Petitto played solidly, turning away a number of Wolves' shots.
Unfortunately, one would get through, putting Newberry up 2-0, as the half expired.

The Knights picked up where they left off in the first half, scoring their 3rd goal of the game, just 1:45 into the 3rd quarter.  After that the Converse defense held tight and pushed away Newberry's offensive attack.  Even though they were down 3-0, their defense was keeping them in the game, giving the offense an opportunity to generate a comeback.  As the 3rd quarter came to an end, the Valkyries were still only down 3-0.  Converse fought hard in the 4th quarter, but the Knights were able to put one more goal on the scoreboard to increase their lead to 4-0.  They were able to run out the clock and as the horn sounded, Converse would fall to Newberry, by a final score of 4-0.

The Valkyries were led by Freshman Eryn Follett, who was playing in her first collegiate game.  She finished the day with 3 shots (1 SOG).  Coach Clarke and her team will have two weeks to regroup before they host Coker University for their first home game of the season.  While this was not the outcome Converse wanted, they were happy to once again not have to wait over 400 days to get back on the field.
