Lightning Strikes Twice: Converse Takes Down #10 Limestone Twice within a Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University Field Hockey team played through monsoon like rain to take down No. 10 Limestone 3-1 at McCracken Field on Tuesday evening.

For Converse (5-5, 5-3 SAC/CC) it was the second time within a seven-day span in which they had taken down the No. 10 ranked Limestone Saints (6-4, 5-2 SAC/CC). The win also marked the Valkyries first ever season sweep of Limestone and they set a new school record for wins in a season with five on the year.

Following a thirty-minute rain delay to start the night, the Valkyries did not take long to get on the scoreboard. Catalina Pistaccio passed the ball to Mira Polzer who fired a shot into the goal just six-minutes into the game.

The Valkyries controlled the ball for most of the first quarter and in the early moments of the second quarter. Then in the 26th minute Charlotte Walker passed the ball to Samantha D'Antonio for the equalizer. The goal never rattled the Valkyries, as Lotte Kanters sent a through pass up to Catalina Pistaccio in the 28th minute of action. Pistaccio scored on a one-on-one opportunity against the goalie and the Valkyries regained the lead.

In the second half of action the Saints attempted a comeback and came close several times but the Valkyries back line stood strong. Converse shutout Limestone in the second half and limited the Saints to just three total shots in the third and fourth quarters.

Mira Polzer led the Valkyries offense with 8 total shots and five shots on goal. Anita Planella played all 60-minutes in goal for Converse and the native of Chile made a pair of saves in the win.

Next Up:
The Valkyries are headed to Maryland this weekend to take on Frostburg State. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
