Field Hockey Weekend Wrap Up

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team went 1-1 this weekend with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Newberry on Saturday and a 3-0 win over Coker on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday afternoon, Converse and Newberry played to a stalemate in regulation and headed to the overtime period at 0-0. In the 66th minute of the contest Millie Gallagher scored the game-winner and gave the Valkyries their only blemish on the week. Luisa Fasold led the Valkyries offense with six total shots and two shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kathryn Daniels made six saves and played all 66 minutes against the Wolves.

Sunday afternoon was a different story however, as the Valkyries offense came alive against the Cobras of Coker. The Valkyries 3-0 win over Coker marked their first ever win against the Cobras and is set a new school record for wins in a season with four.

In the 29th minute of the game, Lotte Kanters scored her fifth goal of the season and gave the Valkyries a 1-0 lead. Early in the second half Bella Pistilli scored her first career goal off a pass from Mira Polzer. For Polzer it was her second assist of the afternoon and the German native now leads the South Atlantic Conference with seven assists. In the 52nd minute of the game, Catalina Pistaccio received a through pass from Kanters and scored on a one-on-one opportunity against the Cobras goalie.

Pistaccio and Kanters each recorded five shots in the match, with Pistaccio leading the team with a trio of shots on goal. Caroline Bailey picked up the win in goal after a scoreless first half of action, while Ciriaca Petitto preserved the shutout with a five save performance in the second half. All 25 field players were able to get in the game on Saturday and head coach Valerie Clarke picked up her 10th career win on Sunday afternoon.
