SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team defeated Southern Wesleyan 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 26-24) on Thursday evening at the Weisiger Center.
Converse (4-18, 4-9 CC) used a strong serving game on Thursday night to break a seven-match losing streak. The Valkyries recorded eight service aces in the win over the Warriors. Converse hit .323 as a team in the opening stanza to set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Converse opened the match on a 5-2 run and maintained the advantage throughout the opening set. Southern Wesleyan stayed within striking distance until the 10-9 juncture of the period. A quick 3-0 spurt by the Valkyries gave Converse the breathing room they needed to win the opening set 25-16.
Through the first 17-points of the second set the Valkyries held a slim 9-8 advantage over the Warriors. Converse went on a small run and took a 12-9 lead over Southern Wesleyan, then the Warriors countered with a 4-0 spurt to take back the lead at 13-12. Trailing 16-15 midway through the second stanza, Converse went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead over the Warriors. The Valkyries never looked back as they took the second set 25-19.
After the first 32-points of the third set the two squads were deadlocked at 16. The Warriors took a 17-16 lead on the next point but the Valkyries quickly countered and tied the set up once again. Southern Wesleyan held a 23-21 edge over the Valkyries late in the period, but back-to-back kills by
Jasmine Finkley tied the set once again. The Warriors won the next point and held their first set point opportunity of the night. The Valkyries ended the match on a 3-0 run to win their fourth home game of the season.
Kiara Cannon and Jsamine Finkley tied for the team lead with 13 kills each, while
Maddie Mount finished third on the team with 8 kills.
Savannah Ducote led the team with 40 assists in the match,
Elizabeth Yohe recorded a team best 19 digs and
Anna Rabon added 12 digs in the win.

Converse will host Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center. The game is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
