SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team remained undefeated at home this season with a 9-2 drubbing of Sewanee on Sunday afternoon at Fulp Field.
The Converse field hockey team set numerous game records on Sunday afternoon as a pair of Valkyries recorded hat-tricks in the win.
Catalina Pistaccio and
Bella Pistilli became the first Valkyrie teammates to collect a pair of hat-tricks in the same game. Pistaccio became the first Converse player to record a hat-trick in the first half of action, while sophomore
Mira Polzer set a school record for most assists in a match with five on the day. As a team the Valkyries set a new program record for goals in a game with nine on the day.
Just moments after honoring their five seniors, Converse took less than a minute to score the opening goal of the game.
Mira Polzer added to her conference lead in total assists when she found
Catalina Pistaccio for the first goal of the game. Three minutes later Molly Wheeler found Moira Darling for the equalizer. Despite outshooting the Tigers 8-1 in the opening period the Valkyries found themselves deadlocked going into the second period.
In the second quarter the Valkyries offense came out swinging at
Bella Pistilli scored off a set play by the Valkyries.
Bo Linders and
Lotte Kanters both picked up assists on the Valkyries go-ahead goal. Moments later
Julia Matthijssen found Pistaccio for her second goal of the contest. Less than a minute later and Polzer found Pistaccio for her third goal of the half.
In the third quarter the Valkyries offense did not let off the gas pedal as Pistilli opened up the scoring in the 37
th minute. Polzer picked up the assist on the Pistilli goal and just seconds later Polzer recorded a goal off a pass by
Luisa Fasold. Then in the 39
th minute Polzer picked up her fourth assist of the match when
Lotte Kanters scored to give the Valkyries a 7-1 lead. The final goal of the third quarter was scored by
Emily Whitlow and was assisted by Fasold in the 41
st minute of the game.
In the fourth quarter the Tigers were the first to score with a goal by Caroline Pulliam in the 53
rd minute. In the 58
th minute of the contest Polzer found Pistilli once again as the Valkyries scored their ninth goal of the match.
Polzer led the Valkyries offense with 5 shots, 2 shots on goal, 1 goal and 5 assists in the match. Pistilli finished second on the team with 4 total shots, 3 shots on goal and 3 goals scored. Pistaccio recorded a trio of goals and shots on goal. Kanters also recorded a trio of shots and pair of shots on goal in the match. Defensively the Valkyries allowed just six total shots in the match.

The Valkyries will play their final home game on Tuesday night against Belmont Abbey. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. at Fulp Field.
