SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-21) win over Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon in the Tom and Tracy Hannah Gym.
For the second consecutive night the Valkyries won every major statistical category over their opponent as they move to 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action. From the start the first set appeared to be a battle between Mount Olive and Converse as they fought for each and every point. Midway through the opening set the Valkyries used a 4-0 run to take a 16-14 advantage over the Trojans. The lead was short lived, however, as Mount Olive countered with a 5-0 run and never looked back in the opening stanza.
In the second set the Trojans held an early 7-4 advantage over the Valkyries. Moments later the Valkyries stormed back to take a 12-10 edge over Mount Olive. The Valkyries used a 7-0 run to take a 22-13 lead and never looked back as they cruised to an easy second set victory.
The Valkyries began the third set on a 7-3 run and led 20-10 midway through the set. Then the Trojans went on a 5-0 offensive spurt to make things interesting in the third period of action. The Valkyries held off the late run and won the third set 25-18. In the fourth set, Converse raced out to a 7-2 lead over Mount Olive. For the remainder of the set the two teams traded scoring runs but it was Converse who came away with a 25-21 fourth set victory to take the match over the Trojans.
Kiara Cannon led the Valkyries offense with 14 kills in the match,
Elizabeth Yohe led the team in service aces (5) and digs (20).
Anna Rabon finished second on the team in kills (9) and in digs (15).
Savannah Ducote produced a team high 34 assists in the match and also recorded 5 kills and 7 digs.
Next Up:
Converse will be back in action next Friday evening with a road trip to Francis Marion. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
