SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman
Luisa Fasold scored her first career goals on Saturday afternoon at McCracken Field, as the Converse Valkyries field hockey team defeated Newberry 2-1 in overtime.
For Converse (7-5, 6-3) it marked their first win over Newberry (7-5, 4-4) since the 2017 season. Including the game on Saturday afternoon, Converse and Newberry have gone to overtime in three consecutive matchups. Saturday marked the first time the Valkyries had come away victorious in an overtime game against the Wolves.
Just three minutes into the game Caitlin Wassermann found Yamin De Meyer for the opening goal of the contest for Newberry. Following the goal, Converse outshot Newberry 7-1 in the opening quarter and 11-2 in the opening half of play. In the 21

Mira Polzer added another assist to her season total when she found
Luisa Fasold for the equalizing goal. The two programs went into the halftime break tied at 1-1.
In the second half the two teams battled for every possession and Newberry outshot Converse 9-5 in the half. Despite being outshot the Valkyries withstood the Wolves counter attacks and forced the game to go into overtime. Just three minutes into the overtime period, Polzer found Fasold once again and the Valkyries remained perfect at home this season.

The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Queens University. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start time at McCracken Field.
