Valkyries Dismantle Warriors in Straight Set Sweep

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-18) sweep over Southern Wesleyan University on Friday night at Tysinger Gym.

Converse (2-11, 2-2 CC) hit a season best .344 as a team and picked up season high 40 team kills on the night. The Valkyries dominated every aspect of the game, collecting more points (49.0), kills (40), aces (5), blocks (4), assists (36) and digs (59).

In the opening set junior middle blocker Jasmine Finkley (Blythewood, S.C.) collected three kills in the first four points of the match to give the Valkyries and early advantage. Converse never looked back as they led 11-3 just moments later in the first set of action. Late in the set the Valkyries went on a 9-0 run to hold a 22-7 advantage over Southern Wesleyan. Converse won the opening set 25-10 and hit .333 in the process.

After an attack error gave up the first points of the second set to Southern Wesleyan, Converse used a 9-0 run to create an insurmountable lead over the Warriors. Following a service error by the Valkyries, Converse once again went on a run and led 15-2 before the Warriors called a timeout to try and slow the Valkyries momentum. Despite the timeout the Valkyries won the second set 25-8 and shot a blistering .379 for the set.

Southern Wesleyan attempted to mount a comeback in the third set and led 6-3 early. The Valkyries countered with a 5-0 run to take back the lead over the Warriors. A few moments later and the Valkyries led 21-15. An attack error by Southern Wesleyan ended the match and gave the Valkyries their first road win of the season.

Finkley led the team with 13 kills on the night and an individual best .722 hitting percentage against the Warriors. Kiara Cannon finished second on the team with nine kills and posted a .600 hitting percentage. Anna Rabon finished third on the team with six kills in the match. Savannah Ducote led the team with 34 assists and Elizabeth Yohe produced a team high 17 digs in the win.
