Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Converse Falls on the Road to Chowan 73-46.

Murfreesboro, NC – The Converse College Women's Basketball Team traveled to North Carolina for its first Conference road game as, they took on Chowan University.   This would be the first of two games against the Lady Hawks this weekend, as both teams were looking for their first conference win of the season.

The Valkyries jumped out quickly in the first quarter, as Tierney Porter grabbed the jump ball and found Lindsey Hardin for a 3-pointer, to take the early lead.  Eventually, Chowan would tie things up at 3-3, when they connected on a three of their own.  A Jordan Brown defensive rebound turned into a FG from Porter, to take back the lead at 5-3.  Porter's basket started an 8-0 run, giving Converse an 11-3 advantage at the first timeout.  Out of the timeout, Chowan would score four straight points to trim the Valkyries lead to 11-7.  Two Jordan Brown free throws increased the lead to 13-7, but a Chowan layup trimmed it back to four.  In the last three and a half minutes, the Lady Hawks went on a 7-3 run and as the quarter came to an end, Converse led by two, 16-14.

As the second quarter began, Ellen Nardella connected on a 3-pointer to push the lead back to five.  However, Chowan would start a run that saw them take control of the quarter.  The Lady Hawks capitalized on Valkyries' turnovers and missed shots, as they converted them into points.  Chowan's Brianna Copeland got a hot hand in the quarter, scoring 4 of the 5 Lady Hawks' 3-pointers.  While Converse continued to attack the basketball, they were only able to score 7 points in the quarter and found themselves trailing Chowan 40-23, at the half.

The Lady Hawks scored the first two points of the quarter, but they were answered by a 3-pointer from Keyshuna Fair.  However, Chowan began an 8-2 run, to increase their lead to 50-28.  At the 3:29 mark of the quarter, Ashley Sides would score her first points of the game by connecting on a 3-pointer.   Unfortunately, that is all the momentum the Valkyries could get, as Chowan saw themselves with their biggest lead of the game, 58-35 at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter began with a Sierra Davenport foul, putting the Lady Hawk's Destiny Robinson on the free throw line.  Robinson converted both and increased the lead to 60-35.  Davenport connect on 1 of 2 free throws of her own and after 4 more Chowan points, Keyshuna Fair hit her second 3-pointer, for her 7th point of the game.  However, that was answered by a 3-pointer from the Lady Hawks to extend the score to 64-39.  Fair would score another 5 points in the quarter to tie her season high of 12 points.  Unfortunately, Converse was unable to mount a comeback and would fall to Chowan by a final score of 73-46.

With the loss, The Valkyries fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.  They were led by Keyshuna Fair with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.  She was followed by Lindsey Hardin, who added 11 points, going 2-3 from the 3-point line.  Jordan Brown had another good night on the boards for Converse with a total of 6 rebounds (1 offensive and 5 defensive).  The Valkyries will have a quick turnaround and look to regroup as both teams meet again tomorrow.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
