Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Keyshuna Fair has career day but Converse falls to Chowan, 86-50

Murfreesboro, NC – Today was game 2 of the weekend series for Converse College and Chowan University.  The Lady Hawks took game 1 by a score of 73-46, but the Valkyries were looking to bounce back and get their first Conference Carolinas win of the season.  On Friday, Chowan converted on a number of 3-pointers and Coach Brunelli and his team were looking to stop that on Saturday.  They also wanted to slow down the Lady Hawks and prevent fast break and second chance points.

As the first quarter began, Chowan picked up where they left off in yesterday's game, hitting a 3-pointer to quickly go up 3-0.  Keyshuna Fair, who was in the starting lineup today, answered with a FG, but the Lady Hawks would hit their second 3 of the game, to increase the lead to 6-2.  Converse's Sierra Davenport came down at the other end to convert on a layup and the Valkyries found themselves only down 6-4.  However, Chowan would go on a 9-0 run and the score was suddenly 15-4, until Ellen Nardella hit a 3-pointer to stop it and cut the lead to eight.  The next few minutes saw the Lady Hawks extend their lead to 27-10, until a Sierra Davenport layup gave Converse their 12th point of the game.  Lindsey Hardin would add a 3-pointer and Keyshuna Fair scored again, but as the quarter ended, the Valkyries trailed the Lady Hawks by a score of 31-18.

Converse looked to cut into the lead in the second quarter but Chowan would score six straight points, until Keyshuna Fair hit a jumper at the 8:22 mark.  Another 3-pointer by Chowan pushed their lead to 20 points and they would eventually find themselves up by 25, 50-25.  Ellen Nardella was able to help cut into the lead by converting two free throws, but Tierney Porter fouled the Lady Hawks' Brianna Copeland on a 3-point attempt and Copeland was able to make all three free throws.  Nardella would connect on another free throw and at the end of the half, the Valkyries trailed 53-28.

Chowan got on the board first in the third quarter, after a layup by Monique Jones.  Keyshuna Fair answered that with a layup of her own.  However, the Valkyries eventually found themselves down by 29 points, 65-36.  Fair and Lindsey Hardin each would score back to back for Converse, but a basket by Monique Jones and another 3-pointer by Brianna Copeland, in addition to a FG, would take the Lady Hawks into the fourth quarter leading by a score of 72-40.

Keyshuna Fair continued her record setting day, scoring back to back baskets in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.  However, Chowan's Brianna Copeland would once again connect on a 3-pointer, to hold off any run the Valkyries would try to make.  They Lady Hawks preceded to go on a 7-0 run until Converse's Davin West connected on a layup in the paint.  Ashley Sides threw up a successful 3 as time was expiring, but Chowan would sweep the weekend series, by a score of 86-50.

Freshman Keyshuna Fair had her second recorded setting day in scoring, as she led the Valkyries with a career high 17 points.  She also grabbed 9 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots. Fair was followed by Ellen Nardella, who chipped in with 12 points, going a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc.  With the loss, Converse falls to 1-5 (0-5) on the season.  They will travel back to Spartanburg and have one day to prepare for Monday, when them welcome in Erskine College to Hannah Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
