Spartanburg, SC – The Converse Women's Basketball team returned to Conference Carolinas play Tuesday night as they faced the University of Mount Olive in Hannah Gymnasium. This was the Valkyries 3rd home game in a row before they hit the road this weekend and they were hoping to finish the homestand on a positive note. Both teams were coming off of a loss and looking to get their first conference win of the season.
During the first 5 minutes of the first quarter, both teams traded baskets, including a 3-pointer from
Lindsey Hardin, which gave the Valkyries a 9-8 lead. However, the Lady Trojans would go on a 7-0 run, until 2 free throws by
Ellen Nardella to stop it and cut the lead to 16-11. Unfortunately, the Valkyries were unable to score again the remainder of the quarter and a layup off by Mount Olive's Azariah Fields, with 25 second left increased the score 20-11.
As the second quarter began, Fields continued to lead the Lady Trojans to a 13-point lead, 25-13. After a media timeout, Harden connected on a 3-pointers, which began a comeback by Converse. After two more baskets from
Keyshuna Fair, and another by Hardin, the Valkyries found themselves only down 27-24. A second chance conversion by
Sierra Davenport, gave Converse a 28-27 with 2:07 remaining in the quarter. However, as the buzzer sounded, the Lady Trojans would recapture the lead 31-29 headed into the locker room.
The third quarter saw Mount Olive begin to increase their lead and suddenly found themselves up 44-34. A layup by
Jordan Brown cut the lead to 8, but that was answered by Mount Olive and they were able to hold off any run the Valkyries tried to make. Converse was unable to convert on the offensive end of the court and the quarter ended with them being down by a score of 49-36.
The fourth quarter was similar to the previous one, as Mount Olive's Fields put them up by 17 points, 54-37. The lead would get as high as 19-points, until Hardin and Fair began to find the basketball. At the media timeout the lead was trimmed to 56-45. After the timeout,
Tierney Porter was able to cut it to 10-points, unfortunately that is the closest the Valkyries would get ultimately falling by a score of 67-50.
Converse was led by
Lindsey Hardin, who had a season high 19 points, to go along with 7 defensive rebounds. She was followed by
Jordan Brown who chipped in with 9 points and 6 rebounds and
Sierra Davenport who scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Valkyries will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Chowan University for two games. Friday's game tip-offs at 5:00pm and Saturday's will begin at 2:00pm. This will be their first Conference Carolinas road game of the year.
