Spartanburg, SC – After falling to Emmanuel College on Friday night, the Converse Women's Basketball team returned to action Saturday for the second of two games against the Lions. Even though Friday's game was not the outcome wanted, the Valkyries were looking to turn things around and earn their first Conference Carolinas win. Coach Brunelli had his team focused and was looking for a solid effort from the home team.
As the first quarter began,
Lindsey Hardin gave Converse an early 2-0 with an outside jumper. Emmanuel would tie the game up at 2-2, but a
Sierra Davenport FG in the paint pushed the Valkyries to a 4-2 lead. The entire quarter became a back and forth affair with both teams exchanging baskets. As the clock reached zero, Emmanuel found themselves with a 2-point lead, 12-10.
The start of the second quarter mirrored the first, as both teams continued to exchanged points.
Jordan Brown and
Keyshuna Fair kept the Valkyries within 2 points, 17-15, but the Lions would go on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 22-15. Two 3-pointers by
Keyshuna Fair and a FG, along with 2 free throws from
Lindsey Hardin, gave Converse a 28-24 advantage going into the half.
The Valkyries continued their momentum in the third quarter and jumped out to a 32-27 after a
Jordan Brown layup. Two free throws by
Lindsey Hardin and a FG from
Eva Carballo, pushed the Converse lead to nine, 36-27. However, that lead would be short lived, as the Lions generated a 12-2 run, which gave them the lead 39-38. Emmanuel continued their scoring and as the quarter came to an end they led the Valkyries by a score of 47-39.
The fourth quarter did not start the way Converse wanted it to. The Lions would continue to connect from the floor and they suddenly found themselves up by a score of 53-39. While
Eva Carballo and
Lindsey Hardin continued to attack the basket, the Valkyries were unable to mount a comeback. Emmanuel got hot from the floor and prevented Converse from trimming lead. As time expired, the Valkyries would fall by a final score of 64-48.
Converse was led by
Lindsey Hardin who scored 13 points, followed by
Keyshuna Fair with 12 points. Fair also went 4-5 from the 3-point line. On the defensive side,
Eva Carballo grabbed 9 rebounds, while
Sierra Davenport grabbed 3. Converse will return to action on Tuesday 1/19/21 when they host conference foe University of Mount Olive. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm and can be see live at
