Kira Cullen

Cullen comes to Converse University with a variety of different experiences within the swimming and academic world. Originally from outside of Detroit, Mich., Cullen’s swimming background started at the age of two and began competitively at the age of six. The Michigan native swam competitively through high school and began teaching swim lessons at the age of 14. Cullen began coaching at 22 for the Ann Arbor YMCA and was head coach from 2006-2012. Cullen maintains her USA Swimming Coaching Certification and is even a USA Swimming Certified Referee. Cullen is always on the lookout for further opportunities for education or certification for her personal development.
 
Cullen also has experience teaching at the university level. She taught mathematics from 2008-2012 at Eastern Michigan University and holds a B.A. in Mathematics and Music. Cullen also earned her M.A. in Mathematics from Eastern Michigan.
 
Cullen’s experience since coaching, is the administration and management of aquatics facilities all around the east coast. Most recently she worked for the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and the Eastway Regional Recreation Center. Cullen continued to teach a variety of levels in aquatics including swim lessons, infant swimming resources lessons, swim lesson instructor training and water safety. She has also been a part of developing new curriculum for swim lessons and water safety nationwide. Cullen has always kept swim team close to her heart throughout her journey away from the sport. Cullen met her husband and fellow swim coach in 2013 in Massachusetts.
 
Cullen loves to be in the water whether that’s the ocean, the great lakes or just doing laps in the pool. Cullen comes home to her husband, two cats and two dogs.
