SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University Field Hockey team fell 1-0 to Lander on Wednesday evening.
With the loss the Valkyries have now lost five straight and drop to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Lander improves to 4-2 overall and they remain unbeaten in conference play with a 2-0 record.
It was a defensive battle from the start as neither offense was able to get any momentum going in the first period. The Valkyries outshot the Bearcats 2-1 in the first quarter but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
In the second quarter of action the Bearcats offense turned up the pressure and attempted five shots. Three minutes into the period, Lander was attempting a corner when Ollie Bond found Shannon MacAngus for the only goal of the contest.
The second half was a back-and-forth contest between the two teams as Converse searched for the equalizing goal. The Valkyries ran out of time before they were able to tie the game.
