Valkyries Come Up Just Short Against GCSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team fell to No. 47 Georgia College 4-3 in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at the Sally Abney Rose Complex.

The Valkyries dropped to 1-5 overall, while the Bobcats improved to 7-4.

Georgia College secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Rachel Black and Victoria C. Vendrell topped seniors Khushi Kharb and Lais Martins 6-1 at No. 1. Alisa Chiang and Lucy Kim cruised past freshman Camille Lacombe and sophomore Tamanna Panwar 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 2, sophomore Romy Rueff and senior Laurel Maynor led Natalie Kirka and Laura Almagro 4-2 when the match was suspended.

The Valkyries fought back in singles, winning three of the six matches to keep the contest close. Kharb earned a straight-sets victory at No. 1, defeating Rachel Black 6-2, 6-3. Panwar followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Victoria C. Vendrell. Rueff battled to a three-set triumph at No. 6, topping Alisa Chiang 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Georgia College claimed the other three singles courts to seal the victory. Natalie Kirka won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 over Maynor. Laura Almagro took No. 4 6-4, 6-1 against Martins. Lucy Kim rallied from a set down to defeat Lacombe 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries return to action on Friday, March 13, as they host the North Greenville Trailblazers at the Rose. The match is set to begin at 2:30 P.M.
