Valkyries Kick Off Spring Break With Pair of Conference Victories

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University kicked off spring-break weekend with a pair of Conference Carolinas victories, defeating the Mount Olive Trojans 5-2 on Friday and the Chowan Hawks 7-0 on Saturday. The Valkyries fell in a nonconference matchup 7-0 to Lander on Monday.

With the results, the Valkyries are now 6-7 on the season and 5-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans are 4-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Hawks are 4-10 overall and 1-6 in conference action. Lander improves to 7-4 overall.

Match One: Converse 5, Mount Olive 2

The Valkyries kicked off doubles play with a sweep as Senior Laurel Maynor and sophomore Romy Rueff won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Khushi Kharb and Lais Martins won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Tamanna Panwar and freshman Ellie Luppino won a tiebreaker 13th set 7-4 to secure the doubles sweep.

Kharb won 6-2 in her first set at No. 1 singles before utilizing an 8-6 tiebreaker in set two. Panwar won her first set 6-2 as well. She needed all three sets, securing a 10-6 super-set victory in set three to secure the Valkyries the point.

Rueff won a close first set at No. 5 singles, taking it to a tiebreaker and winning that 7-4. She won set two 6-2. Freshman Camille Lacombe rounded out the Valkyries' victories with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.

Match Two: Converse 7, Chowan 0

Kharb and Martins cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Luppino and Panwar won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. Maynor and Rueff won 7-5 at No. 2 doubles to complete the sweep.

Kharb won 6-4 in her first set at No. 1 doubles before winning a tiebreaker 12-10 in set two. Panwar won her first set by the same score before utilizing an 8-6 tiebreaker in set two to secure the point for the Valkyries.

Martins had an easier time at No. 3 singles by winning 6-2, 6-1. After falling 6-4 in the first set at No. 4 singles, Maynor won by that same score in set two and had an easier time in set three, winning 6-2.

Rueff won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Lacombe rolled to a 6-0 victory in her first set before closing the match with a 6-3 victory to secure the 7-0 sweep for Converse.

Match Three: Lander 7, Converse 0

Rueff and Maynor won 6-4 at No. 2 singles, but Lander victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles secured the Bearcat point.

The closest a Valkyrie came to securing a singles point was Lacombe, playing at No. 3 singles, who won her first set with a 7-3 tiebreaker. She ultimately fell in the next two sets, and Lander won the match 7-0.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries return to conference action on Wednesday, April 1, as they host the King University Tornado. The match is set to begin at 1 P.M.
