No. 34 Valkyries Split Spring-Break Openers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 34 Converse University men's tennis team split their two weekend matches to open spring break, narrowly falling 4-3 to the Mount Olive Trojans on Friday and rolling to a 7-0 sweep over Chowan on Saturday.

With the split, Converse is now 8-6 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas play. The Trojans improve to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Chowan falls to 6-6 and 3-3 in conference action.

Match One: Mount Olive 4, No. 34 Converse 3

The Trojans took narrow victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to secure the point. Junior Manuel Roncero and freshman James Hardy won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Mathis Blary won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Senior Marty Letessier won 6-2 in consecutive sets at No. 3 singles. Hardy rounded out the Valkyries' singles victories with a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Roncero came close to securing the Valkyries' crucial fourth point at No. 4 singles. He won the first set 6-3 before falling 7-4 in a tiebreaker in set two. He dropped the third set, and Mount Olive held on to win the match 4-3.

Match Two: No. 34 Converse 7, Chowan 0

The No. 44 pairing of juniors Takuma Furumaki and Ben Hyde-Smith won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Letessier and sophomore Lucas Walker won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Roncero and Hardy won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

After falling in his first set, Blary won 6-4 in his second set at No. 1 singles. He secured the victory with a 10-3 super-set victory in his third set.

Letessier won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Furumaki won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Roncero secured a 6-4 victory in consecutive sets to win at No. 4 singles.

Hardy won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Hyde-Smith rounded things out with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries return to action on Wednesday, April 1, as they host the King University Tornado. The match is set to begin at 1 P.M.
