NEWBERRY, S.C. – Although the Converse University Lacrosse team fell 11-9 to Newberry College on Saturday afternoon, there were a few bright spots for the Valkyries as junior attacker
Becky Reinhard became the school's all-time leader in goals scored.
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 2-3 overall on the season, while Newberry improves to 4-2 overall. Reinhard once again led the Valkyries in scoring with four goals on the afternoon, followed by
Hailey Obenchain and
Zoey Jacobs who each scored a pair in the loss.
Karter Lauer also added a goal for the Valkyries on Saturday afternoon. Jacobs led the team with a pair of assists, while
Ainsley Cua led the team with five caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Reinhard has now scored 26 goals in five games this season for the Valkyries, bringing her career total to 138 goals. Reinhard surpasses the previous record of 135 set by Brittni Jones (2015-2018).
Newberry scored the first goal of the game just two minutes into the opening quarter of action. Obenchain responded for the Valkyries with a goal at the 11:08 mark of the first quarter. A pair of Newberry goals at the 10:45 and 7:27 marks had the Wolves up 3-1 over Converse. Jacobs connected with Reinhard with just two minutes left in the period to pull the Valkyries within a goal of Newberry.
In the second quarter, Newberry scored the first two goals of the period and took a 5-2 advantage over the Valkyries. Jacobs and Reinhard connected on their second goal of the game and the Valkyries were back within two scores of the Wolves. Newberry scored their sixth goal of the game with 6:58 to play in the opening half. Obenchain and Reinhard connected with just 2:46 to play in the quarter and the Valkyries were back within a pair of goal of the Wolves. Newberry scored with less than 15 seconds left in the half and took an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.
Coming out of the intermission break, Jacobs scored an unassisted goal to make is a three goal deficit for the Valkyries. Newberry scored twice within a 30 second interval to reach the 10 goal mark first. Going into the final quarter of action the Valkyries trailed 10-6.
Less than 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, both Lauer and Obenchain had scored for the Valkyries. Two minutes later,
Megan Holleran connected with Reinhard for her final goal of the game. Newberry scored on a Woman Down opportunity to maintain a three goal advantage with 9:30 to play in the game. Jacobs scored the final goal of the game with 5:49 to play in the contest.

The Converse lacrosse team will stay on the road with a trip to Shorter on Tuesday night. The match is set to start at 6:00 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
