SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team picked up an 83-47 win over South Carolina Central Christian College on Wednesday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
Tonight's game was an exhibition between the two programs, so the Valkyries remain with a 6-7 overall record for the season. Meanwhile, South Carolina Central Christian College falls to 1-9 overall on the year.
Converse won the opening tip-off against the Gladiators but missed their first shot of the contest. SCCCC scored on their first possession, giving the Gladiators their first and only lead of the match.
Ethan Brownell scored the first points for the Valkyries with 18:43 to play in the first half. Brownell's basket jump started a 10-0 run by the Valkyries offense. Edmonds, Fowler and Surrat all scored during the run for the Valkyries.
The Valkyries never looked back as they built a double-digit lead early on in the first half. Converse eventually built a lead of both 20 and 25 points in the first period. Converse outscored SCCCC 44-23, shooting 50 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line.
Coming out of the halftime intermission both teams were a bit rusty as both sides missed shots on their opening possessions.
Jordyn Surratt scored the first points of the second half with 18 minutes to go in the game. Converse never let SCCCC get close in the second half as they built a 38 point lead against the Gladiators.
Converse outscored SCCCC 39-24 in the second half, shooting 56 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Will Fowler led all scorers with 22-points, Surratt finished with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double and
Camden Edmonds finished third on the team with nine points. A total of 12 Valkyries saw action in the game, with 11 different Valkyries scored in the victory.
