SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team defeated Barton 5-0 on Tuesday evening at Weisiger Stadium.
With the win the Valkyries have now won four straight games dating back to September 16
th and they completed the season sweep against Barton. This is the second season sweep of the season for the Valkyries, after they swept Coker earlier this month. The Valkyries improve to 6-2 overall on the season and Barton drops to 0-7.
In the first half the Valkyries outshot the Bulldogs 10-0 had five shots on goal. The Valkyries also attempted six corners in the first two periods of action. The Converse defense stood strong in the opening half and only let Barton cross the midfield line a handful of times.
In the third quarter the Valkyries offense awoke with a vengeance against the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Amparo Figueroa scored a pair of goals in the period, while junior defender
Chelsy Bunse scored off a corner attempt for the Valkyries.
Remington Lewis and
Mayla Weissenrieder both picked up assists in the period.
In the fourth quarter, Lewis found
Vania Toranzo on the corner attempt for the Valkyries fourth goal of the evening. Less than a minute later,
Julia Mann found Figueroa for the fifth and final goal of the evening. For Figueroa it was her second hat trick of the season and the sophomore now has 12 goals on the season.
Converse finished the night outshooting Barton 21-0 in total shots and 16-0 in shots on goal. The Valkyries also recorded 14 corners to Barton's one corner in the fourth period.
