SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University men's tennis team (2-0) started their fall season out in style, winning both of their first two matches 6-1. They first defeated the Newberry College Wolves (0-1) on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 9 before coming home to defeat the Montreat College Cavaliers (0-1) on Friday, Sept. 12.

Converse 6, Newberry 1
Juniors Takuma Furumaki and Ben Hyde-Smith won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Senior Marty Letessier and sophomore Mathis Blary won 7-6, 7-5 in their tiebreaker, at No. 2 doubles, securing the doubles point for the Valkyries. Senior Parker Davis and freshman Patrick Flood won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles to round out doubles action.

The Valkyries dropped their lone point of the match at No. 3 singles via retirement. Hyde-Smith followed that with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles and Furumaki also needed three sets to win at No. 1 singles 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Blary secured the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Walker won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and sophomore Jackson Fischer split tiebreakers in the first two sets at No. 6 singles but held on to win the third set 10-6.

Converse 6, Montreat 1
Hyde-Smith and Furumaki continued where they left off, winning 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Davis and Blary cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles while Walker and Letessier won easily as well, taking No. 3 doubles 6-0.

The Valkyries suffered their only defeat in a three-set battle at No. 1 singles. Walker won at No. 3 singles by opponent retirement. Flood won 6-3 in consecutive sets at No. 5 singles.

Blary won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Hyde-Smith won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Hardy rounded out the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1 victory in consecutive sets.

The Valkyries will take part in the Lander Invite on Oct. 10 and 11.
