Valkyries Come Up Just Short in Conference Championship Match

SUMTER, S.C. - The Converse University men's tennis (13-6, 7-2 Conference Carolinas) team took the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (22-16, 8-1 Conference Carolinas) down to the final court but ultimately fell 4-3 to the top-seeded Crusaders in the Valkyries' first-ever Conference Carolinas Championship match.

The loss brings to a close a season that saw the Valkyries win a program-record nine matches in a row and 12 of their final 14 matches.

Senior Leopold Morel and junior Marty Letessier won 7-6 at No. 2 doubles, winning the tiebreaker 7-5. Sophomores Ben Hyde-Smith and Manuel Roncero took a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Valkyries the opening point.

After the Crusaders won at No. 1 singles, sophomore Takuma Furumaki won 6-1, 6-3 won at No. 3 singles. Letessier won 6-4 in consecutive sets at No. 4 singles to put Converse up 3-1. Belmont Abbey won the next two matches to put the match 3-3 and down to No. 2 singles.

After dropping set one, junior Stanley Waters won 6-4 to force set three, but fell in the decisive set as Belmont Abbey won the match.
