Women’s Tennis Splits Weekend With Eastern-North-Carolina Foes

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University women's tennis team (7-7, 2-3 Conference Carolinas) defeated the Chowan University Hawks (3-7, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) 5-2 on Friday afternoon but fell to the Barton Bulldogs (7-7, 4-0 Conference Carolinas) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. Both matches were played at the Sally Abney Rose Complex on the campus of Converse University.

Friday, March 21: Converse 5, Chowan 2

The Valkyries opened the weekend by sweeping the doubles point against the Hawks. Juniors Laurel Maynor and Sofia Giraldo-Jimenez won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Romy Rueff and Tamanna Panwar also won 6-3, taking the match at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Agustina Pieve and senior Luiza Estrada won at No. 3 doubles 6-2, completing the sweep.

Junior Khushi Kharb won in three sets at No. 1 singles 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.  Fellow junior Lais Martins won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Panwar won at No. 4 singles in two sets: 6-4, 7-5.

Pieve secured the team's final victory at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1 in consecutive sets.

Saturday, March 22: Barton 4, Converse 3

Kharb and Martins won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles while Maynor and Giraldo-Jimenez won by the same score at No. 2 doubles, securing the doubles point for the Valkyries.

Kharb cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. With the Valkyries down 3-2 overall, Maynor won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, putting the fate of the match on the final court. Unfortunately for Converse, the Bulldogs won the court and the match.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries are back in action on Tuesday, March 25 as they head to Banner Elk, North Carolina to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats. First serve is scheduled for 1 P.M.
