Valkyries Extend Win Streak to Seven Matches By Defeating Chowan and Nationally-Ranked Barton

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University men's tennis team (8-4, 3-1 Conference Carolinas) stretched their win streak to seven matches by defeating the Chowan Hawks (2-6, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) 6-1 on Friday afternoon and the No. 40 Barton Bulldogs (10-6, 2-2 Conference Carolinas) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. Both matches were played at the Sally Abney Rose Complex on the campus of Converse University.

Friday, March 21: Converse 6, Chowan 1

Junior Stanley Waters and sophomore Takuma Furumaki won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Ben Hyde-Smith and freshman Lucas Walker won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, securing the doubles point.

Sophomore Manuel Roncero won easily at No. 1 singles: 6-1, 6-2. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Waters bounced back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4. Junior Marty Letessier won in two sets 7-6, 6-2.

Walker won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5 singles, taking the second-set tiebreaker 7-1. Senior Leopold Morel won 6-2 in consecutive sets to wrap up the 6-1 victory.

Saturday, March 22: Converse 4, Barton 3

Morel and Letessier 6-4 kicked off the match with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. The Valkyries won the doubles point with a 6-4 victory from Waters and Furumaki at No. 2 doubles.

The Valkyries swept the odd-numbered singles matches to secure the match. Roncero won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Walker won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5 singles to put Converse one point away from upsetting the nationally-ranked Bulldogs.

Waters wrapped up a three-set, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles to secure the match, putting Converse up 4-0. The Bulldogs won the final three singles matches.

Next Up For Converse:
The Valkyries are back in action on Tuesday, March 25 as they head to Banner Elk, North Carolina to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats. First serve is scheduled for 1 P.M.
