Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Valkyries Would-Be Comeback Attempt Foiled by Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Converse University women's basketball team (5-14, 3-9 Conference Carolinas) trailed by as many as 22 points in their road game against the Young Harris Mountain Lions (13-7, 7-5 Conference Carolinas) before a 28-point fourth quarter put the team within one possession of tying the game in its final seconds. Young Harris narrowly held off the Valkyries and won 65-60.

Senior Elisa Solé Sanchez led the Valkyries with 19 points. Junior guard Alexis Becker also tallied double-digit points with 10 while a pair of Valkyries, graduate guard Jordan Brown and senior guard Reagan Cameron, each had nine points. Brown led the team in rebounding with six, all defensive rebounds.

The game was close in the first quarter despite Converse sinking just two field goals. They held Young Harris to 33.3% shooting and never sent them to the free throw line in the opening 10 minutes. The same could not be said about the second quarter in which the Mountain Lions got hot from beyond the arc and went 4-for-5. At halftime the score stood at 33-19.

While the Mountain Lions cooled off from beyond the arc in the second half, they increased their lead by four points by the end of the third quarter. The Valkyries had their best shooting quarter to that point in the game with a 37.5 field goal percentage in the third quarter.

Converse began to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter, going on an 18-7 run over the first seven minutes of the final quarter. But despite their best efforts, Converse fell short of their comeback attempt and fell 65-60.

Converse is back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 5, as they head to Central, South Carolina to take on the Southern Wesleyan Warriors. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 P.M.
