Valkyries Defeat Coker on Saturday Afternoon

HARTSVILLE, S.C. The Converse men's basketball team defeated the Coker Cobras 92-57 Saturday afternoon in a road game pitting the Valkyries against their former head coach.

With the win, Converse improves to 1-1 on the season. Coker falls to 1-1.

It is the first time in the program's short history that the Valkyries have faced off against a former coach, improving to 1-0 in such games.

How It Happened
Redshirt senior Latavian Lawrence nailed the first basket of the game on the Valkyries' first possession. The lead exchanged hands five times in the first 10 minutes of the game and neither team led by more than three points.

With 6:44 remaining in the first half, redshirt freshman Will Fowler hit a three pointer to put Converse up by six. He followed it up with two free throws on the next possession to grow the lead to eight. Coker fought back and reclaimed the lead with under two minutes to play in the half. Down one point with one second left in the half, Fowler nailed a trio of free throws to put Converse up two points heading into the break.

The Valkyries did not struggle in the second half, allowing just 19 points and leading for almost the entirety of the game's final 20 minutes. Coker scored their last basket with 5:14 remaining in the game as Converse cruised in the second half, winning 92-57.
