SPARTANBURG S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team defeated Belmont Abbey 68-60 inside the Weisiger Center on Wednesday evening.
Converse improves to 5-7 overall this season and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas action this year. The Valkyries are now 3-1 against Belmont Abbey inside the Weisiger Center. The win also puts the Valkyries in a tie for first place in the Conference Carolinas Northwest Division standings. The Crusaders fall to 1-8 overall on the season and 0-6 in Conference Carolinas play.
Jay Mitchell led the team with 23 points on the night,
Joel Pullen contributed a season high 17 points off the bench, and
Leo Da Campo finished the evening with 11 points. Da Campo had the most impressive stat line of the night as he led the team in rebounds (8) and tied for the team lead with six assists.
Kyle Monk led the team with three blocked shots on the night.
First Half Notes:
- Both teams missed their first field goal attempts of the game, but Alhousseny Diallo scored the first points of the game for Belmont Abbey with 18:58 to go in the period.
- Da Campo scored the first points of the match for Converse on the Valkyries next possession down the court.
- With 16:00 minutes to play in half, Edoardo Buffo found Kyle Monk for the open three-pointer and the Valkyries held their first lead of the match at 7-6.
- Not a lot of scoring happened over the next seven minutes of game time between either side. With 9:53 to play in the half, Belmont Abbey held a 16-9 advantage over the Valkyries.
- The Valkyries offense started to click and over the next few minutes of action, as they used a 15-2 run to steal the momentum back.
- Holding a 24-18 edge over the Crusaders, Converse forced Belmont Abbey to call their first timeout of the half.
- Going into the halftime break, the Valkyries held a 30-24 lead over the Crusaders. Converse shot 27 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range, and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Coming out of the halftime break, the Crusaders hit back-to-back three-pointers and tied the game at 30.
- Jay Mitchell went on a personal 5-0 run to steal the momentum back for the Valkyries. Over the next few moments of game action, the two teams were deadlocked as they matched each other with each possession.
- Tied at 40 with 12:05 to play in the game, Joel Pullen scored five straight points to put the Valkyries ahead for good.
- Converse continued to put pressure on Belmont Abbey and with 7:38 to play Joel Pullen knocked down a three-pointer to give Converse their largest lead of the match at 55-43.
- For the remainder of the game, the Crusaders attempted to catch up to the Valkyries lead, but it was to no avail as Converse kept the game out of reach.
- Converse connected on their free throws down the stretch and outscored Belmont Abbey 38-36 in the second half. The Valkyries shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range, and 78 percent from the free throw line.
