FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 97-69 to Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
With the loss Converse is now 5-9 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas action this season. This is the first time Emmanuel has swept the season series since the 2021-2022 basketball season. The Lions improve to 11-7 overall and 9-1 in Conference Carolinas play this year with the win on Saturday.
For the first time this season, 12 different Valkyrie basketball players scored in a road game for Converse.
Edoardo Buffo led the team with 10-points, followed by
Isac Ahnstrand who had eight points coming off the bench.
Jay Mitchell and
Ben Jones each contributed seven points, while
Caleb Reams,
Earl Burgess III,
Joel Pullen,
Leo Da Campo, and
Kervens Yacinthe added six points each in the loss.
Kyle Monk,
Davion McAdam, and
Chuks Uzoka each contributed a basket in the loss to Emmanuel. Buffo and Mitchell led the team with six rebounds each, while Mitchell also led the team in assists and steals on the evening.
First Half Notes:
- Emmanuel opened the game on an 8-0 run and forced Converse to call a timeout just two minutes into the contest.
- Ben Jones scored the first points of the game for Converse at the 17:45 mark of the first half.
- With 15:39 to play in the opening period, Emmanuel had stretched their lead out to 15-2 over the Valkyries.
- Leo Da Campo scored the next two baskets for the Valkyries as they attempted to chip away at the Lions lead.
- At the 7:42 to mark of the opening half, Emmanuel held a 32-17 advantage over Converse. Ben Jones then ignited the Valkyries offense with a mid range jump shot. Caleb Reams and Ahnstrand then scored a pair of quick baskets, and Converse was back within eight points down 32-24.
- Over the next four minutes of game time, the Valkyries kept within striking distance of the Lions. With 3:03 to play in the period, Da Campo made a layup and Converse trailed 37-31.
- Emmanuel closed out the first half on a 9-0 run and took a 46-31 lead into the halftime break. Converse shot 42 percent from the field, 13 percent from three-point range, and 100 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Buffo scored the first points of the half for either team as the Valkyries looked to stay within striking distance of the Lions.
- With 17:02 to play in the half, Chris Dees hit a fastbreak three-pointer and Emmanuel held their first 20-point lead of the game at 56-36.
- Over the next few minutes of game time, the Valkyries tried to keep pace with the Emmanuel offense, but was only able to cut the lead down to 18-points on a few occasions.
- With 5:54 left in the game, Emmanuel used a 10-0 run to put the match out of reach at 88-60.
- Converse was outscored 51-38 in the second half, shooting 46 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line.

The men's basketball team will stay on the road this week with a midweek matchup against North Greenville on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.
