Valkyries Sweep Day One of the Valdosta State Tournament

VALDOSTA, GA. – The Converse University volleyball team won their first two matches of the Valdosta State Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Valkyries started the day by knocking off Valdosta State 3-1 and followed it up with a 3-0 sweep of Erskine in the afternoon matchup. This is the first time since 2014 that the Valkyries volleyball team has started out with a 2-0 record.
 
 
Match One: Converse 3, Valdosta State 1
  • The Valkyries got off to a start against the Blazers, opening the set on a 4-0 run.
  • Later in the first set, Tori Barr and Noemia Chiacchio recorded a pair of kills to make it an 8-3 lead for the Valkyries.
  • The Blazers began to chip away at the first set lead for the Valkyries, but Ella Ruckman gave Converse a 21-17 advantage late in the period.
  • Despite a late run from Valdosta State, the Valkyries held on to win the opening set 25-23.
  • Converse recorded 14 kills in the opening period and hit .182 from the field.
  • The second set was a lot closer between the two schools as both teams were knotted at 10 points in the opening moments of the period.
  • Trailing 21-19 late in the second set the Valkyries stepped up and finished on a 6-3 run to steal a set from the Blazers.
  • The Valkyries finished with 13 kills and hit .214 for the second set against Valdosta State.
  • In the third set the two teams were deadlocked at nine, before Valdosta State used an 8-2 run to take a commanding lead over the Valkyries.
  • Converse stayed within striking distance and battled back to an 18-15 score. However, a 6-0 run by the Blazers stalled the Valkyries attempt at a sweep.
  • In the fourth set the two squads remained evenly matched as they were dead even at 14-14. This time, however, it was the Valkyries who took advantage of a 5-0 run against the Blazers.
  • Valdosta State rallied late, but it was not enough as Converse held on for a 25-21 fourth set win.
  • Converse posted 13 kills in the final set and posted their best hitting percentage of the match at .235.
  • Converse finished with 51 kills, 7 blocks, 47 assists, and 79 digs against the Blazers.
  • Alysha Arroyo posted a double-double in her first career game for Converse, finishing with 24 assists and 24 digs. Mackenzie Day finished second on the team with 20 digs and Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 15 assists.
  • Chiacchio led the team with 11 kills, Alayah Robertson finished second on the team with 10 kills and Megan Carpenter finished third on the team with 8 kills against the Blazers.
 
Match Two: Converse 3, Erskine 0
  • In the second match of the afternoon, Converse faced off against fellow Conference Carolinas rival Erskine.
  • The Valkyries started out red hot in the opening set as they raced out to an 8-0 advantage over the Flying Fleet.
  • Converse went on to win the opening set 25-15 over Erskine, recording 11 kills and a .188 hitting percentage.
  • In the second set the Valkyries opened on a 7-3 run before Erskine countered with an offensive spurt of their own.
  • Following a 9-9 deadlock, Converse used an 11-4 run to take a commanding lead over the Flying Fleet.
  • The Valkyries ended up winning the second set 25-16 over Erskine. Converse posted 16 kills in the set and had a .419 hitting percentage.
  • In the third and final set, the Valkyries raced out to a 16-5 advantage and eventually held a 23-8 lead. Converse completed the three set sweep with a 25-13 win in the final period.
  • Converse recorded 10 kills in the final set and hit .286 as a team.
  • Converse finished with 52 points, 37 kills, 10 aces, 5 blocks, 34 assists and 50 digs against Erskine.
  • Megan Carpenter led the team with 10 kills, Tori Barr finished second on the team with 8 kills and Noemia Chiacchio finished with 7 kills.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 16 assists and Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 9 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 16 digs against the Flying Fleet.
 
Next Up:
Converse will be back in action tomorrow morning against Winston-Salem State University. In the afternoon the Valkyries will close out the Valdosta State Tournament with a match against Rollins College at 4:30 p.m.
