Men’s Tennis Gets Back in Win Column With Victory Over Bobcats

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University men's tennis team (6-5, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) snapped their four-match losing streak in grand fashion as they dominated the Lees-McRae Bobcats (5-9, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 5-2.

Freshmen Takuma Furumaki and Manuel Roncero took a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to open the match. Sophomore Marty Letessier and junior Leopold Morel sealed the doubles points with a 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles, taking the tiebreaker 7-2.

After the Bobcats evened the match with a singles victory, Letessier took his singles match at No. 3 singles by winning 6-1 in consecutive sets. Roncero put Converse one win away from taking the match by winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Junior Cameron Davies secured the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Morel secured Converse's final point of the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

Furumaki, competing with the match decided, won his first set 7-5 but fell in the second set. In the decisive set at No. 2 singles, Furumaki lost by a narrow 11-9 margin. Despite the Shizuoka-shi, Japan native's rare loss, the Valkyries still secured their first Conference Carolinas victory of the season.

The Valkyries return to the courts on Saturday, April 6 as they host conference-newcomers Young Harris at 1 P.M.
