SUMTER, S.C.  – Competing against the No. 6 seeded Francis Marion Patriots (12-7, 5-3 Conference Carolinas) for the second in as many matches, the No. 7 seeded Converse University men's tennis team (8-10, 3-5 Conference Carolinas) fell 4-0 in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Championship Friday morning at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.

The Patriots opened the match by winning No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Unlike the regular season, matches in the postseason are played to clinch, meaning the doubles point is over when one team has won two matches.

The Patriots then won No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles, and No. 5 singles to reach the required four points to clinch the match. As with the doubles point, once the match is decided, all other matches are stopped.

Sophomore Marty Letessier captured a 7-5 victory in his first set at No. 3 singles. Freshman Manuel Roncero took his first set at No. 4 singles to a tiebreaker and captured a 6-1 victory in his second set.

With the loss, the Valkyries' season is now over. The Converse tennis teams will take the courts again in the fall.
