Obenchain Breaks Program Record as Valkyries Explode Offensively in the Second Half

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse lacrosse team sent their lone senior, Jordyn Rose, out in style on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Chowan 25-12 at Weisiger Stadium.

With the win Converse improves to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The win also secures the Valkyries a spot in the Conference Carolinas tournament, which will start in a few weeks. Meanwhile, Chowan falls to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in Conference Carolinas play this season.

Sophomore attackman, Hailey Obenchain was the star of the game as she tallied nine goals and seven assists to lead the Valkyries offense. Obenchain's 16-point effort set a new program record for points in a single game, and gave the sophomore 167 career points, a new program record as well. Obenchain is now four points away from setting the single season points record.

Obenchain was not the only Valkyrie to have a stellar day on the field for the lacrosse team. Fellow sophomore, Gencie Coan had a five goal and two assist performance to finish second on the team with seven points. Corynn Psychoghios posted a hat trick, while Megan Holleran finished second on the team with four assists against the Hawks.

Reagan Collins had yet another great performance for the Valkyries on Saturday afternoon. The junior finished with nine saves against the Hawks, bringing her weekly total to 19.

In the opening quarter, Chowan struck first with a goal less than two minutes into the game. Jordyn Rose found Izzy Eby for the Valkyries first goal of the game with 11:58 to play in the period. Chowan then scored back-to-back goals, taking a 3-1 lead in the early moments of the quarter. The Valkyries offense never faltered as Coan and Holleran scored back-to-back woman up goals to tie the game once again. The two teams continued to trade goals for the rest of the period, and went into the second tied at five.

In the second quarter, Eby found Karly Driscoll for the first goal of the period and the Valkyries held a 6-5 advantage. The rest of the quarter the two teams matched each other goal-for-goal until the final 90 seconds of the half. Both Ashley Ames and Obenchain scored to give the Valkyries a 10-8 edge heading into the locker room.

Coming out of the halftime intermission the Valkyries scored five unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Converse outscored Chowan 9-4 in the third quarter and 6-0 in the fourth quarter. Obenchain scored five goals in the second half, while Coan and Psychoghios each had a hat trick in the second half against the Hawks.
