Historic Season Comes to A Close For Converse Women’s Basketball

Box Score Young Harris, Ga.  – A late fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short for the Converse University women's basketball team (14-16, 9-9 Conference Carolinas) as they dropped their second-round game to the Young Harris Mountain Lions (16-13, 11-7 Conference Carolinas)

Junior guard Zariyah Washington posted a team-high 13 points. Fellow junior guard Sierra Jones was the team's second-leading scorer with 10 points. Graduate guard Jordan Brown led Converse in rebounds with nine.

It took Converse just over two and a half minutes to get on the scoreboard despite winning the opening tip. That first basket came on a three pointer from Washington, cutting into an early seven-point lead from the Mountain Lions. It took almost another two minutes for the next Converse basket, also scored by Washington. Despite not converting her and-one, redshirt senior center Sydney Wilson grabbed the offensive rebound, and Washington converted another three pointer, cutting the lead to five, 13-8. After four points from the home, Jones Converted a Converse steal into two points, which she did again 45 seconds later. Young Harris added two points over the final 2:45 while Converse added a single point, giving the Mountain Lions a 19-13 edge at the first break.

Opening in the second quarter with the ball, Brown sank the first basket following an offensive rebound. After another two-point field goal from Young Harris, Sanchez sank her first basket of the game, keeping the game on back-and-forth pace. Davenport drilled a three pointer, putting the game within a single basket for the first time since the opening minute. The Valkyries defense held the Young Harris offense scoreless for over four minutes as they twice cut the lead to a single point. With just over a minute to play in the opening half, Wilson knocked down the game-tying jump shot.

Just under two minutes into the third court, Jones sank Converse's first basket, cutting a newly built Young-Harris lead to two points again. But as the Mountain Lions converted the back half of a pair of free throws and sank a bucket, Converse was once again down by two possessions. The lead swelled to nine points before Jones sank Converse's next basket. Davenport and junior guard Raegan Cameron ended an 8-0 Young-Harris run with back-to-back three pointers with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter. Wilson sank a pair of free throws to close out Converse's scoring, cutting the lead to ten, 51-41, with ten minutes to play.

Young Harris started with the ball in the final quarter, sinking the first basket as well. Cameron responded with a Converse three pointer, further cutting into Young Harris's lead. The Young Harris defense held strong, keeping Converse with just one field goal over the next four minutes. Converse kicked off a nine-point run, cutting the lead to seven with under a minute to play. But with the comeback attempt coming just a little too late, Young Harris won the game 71-59.

With their run in the Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship coming to end, the Valkyries' season does as well. The 2023-24 season saw Converse secure a handful of program milestones including: the program's most wins in its NCAA era, Converse's first-ever basketball title of any kind in the school's NCAA era, and their first-ever postseason game and victory.
