SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's lacrosse team dismantled Southern Wesleyan 21-11 on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
With the win the Valkyries end a two game losing skid and improve their record to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Southern Wesleyan drops to 1-10 overall this season and 1-3 in Conference Carolinas play.
Becky Reinhard and
Hailey Obenchain were the catalyst to one of the best offensive performances in program history. Reinhard scored a career high nine goals against the Warriors and reset her career best by two goals. The nine goal performance ranks third all-time in program history, Reinhard becomes the first player since Cassidy O'Neill scored nine goals against Southern Wesleyan during the 2022 season. Reinhard now has a team high 39 goals on the season, places her inside the top-10 in program history for goals in a single season.
Obenchain reset her own program record on Saturday afternoon with a nine assist performance against the Warriors. Obenchain had eight assists last season against Shorter (3/18/23), the sophomore also became the first player in program history to have back-to-back 30 assist seasons.
Reagan Collins had a six save outing on Saturday afternoon, but more importantly recorded her 300
th career save. Collins becomes the first Valkyrie goalie to eclipse the 300 mark since Alex Gurecki accomplished the feat almost a decade ago. Collins now sits second all-time with 304 career saves.
The Valkyries opened the game on a 5-0 run, as
Gencie Coan scored a hat trick in the first seven minutes of the game against the Warriors. The early scoring run prompted Southern Wesleyan to use a timeout early. Lauryn Esposito scored the first goal of the match for the Warriors with 3:21 to play in the quarter.
Karter Lauer scored the final two goals of the period to give Converse a 7-1 advantage going into the second quarter of action.
Becky Reinhard scored her second goal of the game in the first eight seconds of the second quarter, giving Converse an 8-1 lead. Taylor Byrd scored twice for Southern Wesleyan to keep them in the game, but Converse ended the half on a 3-0 run.
Coming out of the halftime break Reinhard and
Megan Holleran combined to score the first three goals of the period. Despite trailing 14-3 the Warriors continued to hang around, and with 37 seconds to play they trailed 16-7. Another goal by Reinhard gave the Valkyries a 10 goal cushion heading into the final quarter of action.
In the fourth quarter both teams scored four goals, as Reinhard scored her final goal of the day with 8:29 to play in the game. Coan and Holleran scored the final two goals for the Valkyries, while Aleiza Manns scored the final goal of the game for Southern Wesleyan.
