Valkyries Overcome Double-Digit Deficit To Down Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team overcame a 14-point second half deficit on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Southern Wesleyan 76-73 inside Tysinger Gym.  

With the win Converse improves to 17-8 overall and 9-6 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries have now won four straight against Southern Wesleyan dating back to last season and they sweep the season series for the second consecutive year. Southern Wesleyan drops to 4-21 overall and 3-12 in Conference Carolinas play.

Uzziah Dawkins led the team with 21-points and 3-assists on Saturday afternoon. Earl Burgess III finished second on the team with 17-points and led the team with 7-rebounds and 2-blocks against the Warriors. CJ Jamison finished third on the team with 11-points and 5-rebounds on the afternoon.

First Half Notes:
  • Southern Wesleyan won the opening tip-off and Raevon Allen found Jonathan Taylor for the opening three-pointer of the game. Allen then stole the ball on the Valkyries opening possession and dunked it to give the Warriors a 5-0 advantage.
  • At the 18:57 mark of the opening half, Jay Mitchell found Burgess III for the Valkyries first points of the game.
  • Trailing 8-2 the Valkyries started to cut into the Warriors lead with a three-pointer by Jamison. The three-pointer jump started a 6-0 run for the Valkyries offense and with 17:02 to play the game was tied at eight.
  • With 13:51 to go in the half, Burgess III had a put back layup to give the Valkyries their first advantage of the game at 16-14.
  • The rest of the half it was a back-and-forth scoring contest between the two sides. Both teams countered when they other took a small lead, Southern Wesleyan ended the half on a 6-0 run.
  • Trailing 37-34 at the half, Converse shot 44 percent from the field, 22 percent from three-point range and 86 percent from the free throw line.   
Second Half Notes:
  • In the second half, Southern Wesleyan opened the period on a 9-0 run extending their lead to a 48-34 advantage over the Valkyries.
  • Over the course of the run the Valkyries used a pair of timeouts, before Leonardo Da Campo scored the first points of the half at the 16:35 mark.
  • Converse then started to cut into the double-digit deficit and with 14:30 to play Mitchell nailed a three-pointer and the Valkyries were back within eight points.
  • Converse played aggressive in the second half and got to the free throw line 22 times to help them overcome the double-digit deficit.
  • With 6:29 to play in the half, Joel Pullen made a layup and the Valkyries trailed 58-57. Moments later, Dawkins found Pullen for the go-ahead fast break jumper.
  • The Valkyries continued to convert on their free throw attempts down the stretch as they never yielded the lead over the final 5:52 of game time.
  • Converse outscored Southern Wesleyan 42-36 in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field, 12 percent from three point range and 86 percent from the free throw line.
