Mitchell Scores Season High Against Bearcats

GREENWOOD S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 86-42 to Lander on Tuesday evening.
 
The Valkyries drop to 1-5 overall this season and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas action, meanwhile, Lander improves to 4-3 overall on the season. Converse is now 0-3 against Peach Belt schools this season.
 
Jay Mitchell led the team with 13-points, 7-rebounds, and one block. Kervens Yacinthe finished second on the team with seven points, while Caleb Reams, Myson Lowe, and Isac Ahnstrand all contributed five points in the loss.   

First Half Notes:
  • Lander opened the game on a 5-0 run, before Edo Buffo scored the first points of the game for Converse at the 16:12 mark of the period.
  • The Valkyries offense then went cold for the next six minutes of game time, allowing Lander to run out to a 20-2 advantage.
  • Yacinthe ended the Valkyries scoring drought with a three-pointer at the 10:28 mark of the half. A block by Earl Burgess III at the other end of the court led to a fast break three-pointer by Mitchell.
  • Converse scored just 12-points the rest of the half, as they went into the halftime break down 41-20. The Valkyries shot 28 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arch and 0 percent from the free throw line.  
Second Half Notes:
  • Coming out of the halftime break, Lander began the period on a 9-0 run highlighted by a dunk from Dominic Stanford.
  • With 14:57 to play in the game, Yacinthe hit a three-pointer to give the Valkyries their first points of the half.
  • Over the next several minutes of game time the two squads exchanged baskets with one another. The Valkyries were never able click offensively and put a rally together against the Bearcats defense.
  • With 5:09 to play in the contest, Lander built their lead to 77-36 over the Valkyries. A few minutes later and the Bearcats lead was up to 46 against Converse.
  • Jaylen Golston and Yacinthe scored the final points of the game for Converse. The Valkyries were outscored 45-22 in the second half, shooting 25 percent from the field, 23 percent from three-point range, and 50 percent from the free throw line.

The men's basketball team will be back in action against Lees-McRae on Saturday, December 14th. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
