Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brown and Davenport Score 14 Points Each Against Regionally-Ranked Coker

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the fifth time since the Coker Cobras left Conference Carolinas following the 2012-13 school year, the Converse University women's basketball team squared with Hartsville's hardwood darlings. The Valkyries (3-8, 1-3 Conference Carolinas) fell to the Cobras (10-1, 7-1 SAC) by a final score of 67-52 Saturday afternoon at the Wesiger Center.

Sophomore center Tatiana Brown and graduate guard Alisa Davenport each led Converse with 14 points. Fellow graduate guard Jordan Brown also scored double-digit points with 11 while leading the team in rebounds and steals with eight and five respectively.

Senior guard Zariyah Washington led all players with five assists.

The Valkyries and Cobras exchanged baskets and leads in the first quarter. While Converse shot 29.4% from the field in the first quarter, it came on nine more shots than Coker attempted in the opening 10 minutes. The Valkyries held Coker to just one three-point attempt, which did not go in, in the first quarter. Converse led by three points heading into the second quarter.

Converse improved their field-goal efficiency up to 46.2% in the second quarter but so did Coker who went 58.8% from the field, and increased their volume of shots to 10-for-17, in the second quarter. The Valkyries largest lead of the game came with 8:05 to play until halftime when they were up four points on the Cobras. Their final lead of the game came with 6:45 to play in the first half.

A 25-point second quarter from Coker gave them a 10-point halftime lead.

Converse shot 50% from the field in the second half but were unable to make up any ground with the score as Coker further pulled away and won 67-52.

With Division II athletics on pause for the 2024 holiday season, the Valkyries are finished on the court for the calendar year. They return to the court as they host conference-newcomer Shorter on Jan. 4, 2025.
