Mitchell Has Career Outing Against Augusta

SPARTANBURG S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 89-81 to Augusta University on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.
 
The Valkyries fall to 3-6 overall on the season and 0-4 against Peach Belt Conference opponents. Augusta improves to 7-4 overall and the Jaguars are now on a seven game winning streak.
 
Jay Mitchell led the Valkyries on Saturday afternoon with a career high 24 points against Augusta. Mitchell has now had double-digit outings in five-of-six games played this season. Edoardo Buffo finished second on the team with 17-points and led the team with seven assists on the afternoon. Caleb Reams contributed 13-points in the loss and Joel Pullen rounded out the Valkyries double digit scorers with 10-points. Leo Da Campo led the team with six rebounds on the day, while Earl Burgess III had the Valkyries lone block in the game.


First Half Notes:
  • Augusta opened up the game on a 7-0 run against the Valkyries and forced Converse to use a timeout with 18:20 to play in the opening half.
  • Out of the timeout break, Buffo found Ben Jones for the Valkyries first points of the game.
  • With 16:10 to play in the half, Augusta held a 12-4 advantage over Converse. A midrange jumper from Jones jumped started a Valkyries offensive spurt. Caleb Reams and Mitchell hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 12.
  • Over the next several minutes of game time the two teams matched one another shot for shot, but with 11:41 to play in the half, Augusta held a 21-19 edge over the Valkyries.
  • With 9:42 to play in the half, Buffo hit a mid range jumper to tie the game at 23. A 9-0 run by Augusta over the next two minutes of game time had the Jaguars back out in front.
  • The Jaguars increased their lead to double-digits following a made free throw from Elisa Palsson with 7:11 to play.
  • The Valkyries went into the halftime break down 48-38 against Augusta. Converse shot 41 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line.  
Second Half Notes:
  • Coming out of the halftime intermission, Buffo found Reams for the first three-pointer of the period. Augusta matched at the other end of the court to maintain a 10-poit advantage over Converse.
  • For the majority of the second half the Jaguars held a double-digit lead over the Valkyries and it climaxed with a 14-point advantage at the 9:46 mark of the second half.
  • Over the next three minutes of action, the Valkyries offense began to chip away at the Jaguars double-digit lead. With 6:42 to play Joel Pullen hit a free throw to cap off a 12-2 run by Converse.
  • For the remainder of the half the Valkyries continued to stay close and within striking distance of Augusta. Unfortunately, time ran out before the Valkyries were able to complete the comeback.
  • The Jaguars hit their free throws down the stretch to defeat the Valkyries 89-81. Converse won the second half, outscoring the Jaguars 43-41 in the second half. The Valkyries shot 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from three point range and 56 percent from the free throw line in the second half.

The men's basketball team will be back in action against Livingstone on Thursday, January 2nd. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
