SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team fell 3-1 to Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.
With the loss, Converse falls to 18-8 overall and 12-4 in Conference Carolinas action. Emmanuel improves to 20-9 overall and 16-1 in Conference Carolinas play this season.
In the opening set, the Valkyries and the Lions were deadlocked at 10 through the first 20 points of the stanza. A few points later, Emmanuel made the first move of the match and raced out to a 20-14 advantage over the Valkyries. Converse attempted a late comeback, but ran out of time as the Lions won the opening set 25-18.
In the second set, the two teams were once again tied through the first 22 points of the frame. Converse made the first move to go up 14-11, before Emmanuel countered with a 6-1 run to take the lead back. Trailing 20-18, Converse made a late move and used a 4-0 spurt to take a 22-20 lead over Emmanuel. The Valkyries went on to win the second set 25-22.
Following the extended set break between the second and third periods, Emmanuel opened the third set on a 15-6 run. The Valkyries were unable to gather any momentum in the stanza and ultimately fell 25-17 to the Lions.
In the fourth set, Emmanuel opened the period on a 7-4 run. Converse countered by winning the next five points in the set to take a 9-7 lead over the Lions. Emmanuel was quick to counter the Valkyries offensive spurt and rallied with a run of their own. When the rally had finished the Lions held a 17-13 advantage over the Valkyries. Emmanuel went on to win the fourth set 25-17 over Converse.
The Valkyries finished with 59 points, 43 kills, 8 aces, 8 blocks, 39 assists, and 69 digs.
Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 10 kills and 4 aces.
Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with nine kills and
Ella Ruckman finished third on the team with seven kills.
Alayah Robertson led the team with six blocks in the match, while
Alysha Arroyo led the team with 26 assists.
Mackenzie Day once again led the team with 23 digs in the match.

The Converse volleyball team will be back in action this coming week in Charlotte, N.C. when they take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats on Tuesday night.
