SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team fell 3-0 to Lander on Wednesday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
With the loss, Converse falls to 18-6 on the season and Lander improves to 17-4 overall. It was just the second time this season the Valkyries were swept by an opponent and the first since October 11
th.
Lander opened up the first set on a 10-2 run against the Valkyries. Converse made a slight run to pull within striking distance at 12-7. Another run by the Lander offense, had the Bearcats ahead 23-9. A late rally by Converse was not enough as the Bearcats won the opening set 25-14.
In the second set, Lander raced out to a 5-2 advantage over Converse before the Valkyries made a counter attack. By the middle of the set the Valkyries had tied the period at 16. Lander ended the period on a 9-3 run to take the second set 25-19.
Converse opened up the third set on a 7-2 run against the Bearcats. Moments later a 6-0 run by the Lander offense had the Bearcats back on top 10-9 over the Valkyries. A few points later and Lander held an 18-12 lead over Converse. However, the Valkyries continued to hang around and eventually pulled within a point at 23-22. Converse was unable to complete the comeback as they dropped the final set 25-23.
The Valkyries finished with 36 points, 29 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks, 24 assists, and 36 digs.
Ariel Bryant led the team with eight kills,
Tori Barr finished second on the team with seven kills, and
Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with five kills.
Jayden Johnson led the team with 11 assists, while
Mackenzie Day finished with 11 digs against the Bearcats.

The Converse volleyball team will be back in action on Friday night against Mount Olive.
